Choosing The Right Accountancy Service

Thinking about Accountancy Services?

How often do you think about choosing an accountancy service? Not very often, I’d assume.

However, we often find ourselves picking professionals to handle our personal matters: picking what school to send your kids to, picking a GP or dentist that’s close enough to home, picking a shop that’ll fix your car or the leaky pipes in your home. But what matters more than anything in these decisions?

Proximity and convenience.

It stands to reason that if your car is developing issues or you’re feeling ill, it needs to be easy to get there or contact them, and the same applies to accountancy services. However, you should always make sure that your accountancy service is fully accredited, reputable and professional.

Accreditation

While they’re generally few and far between in the country, there are ‘accountancy’ firms that lack qualifications from accountancy bodies like the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants (either ICAEW or ICAS) or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

These organisations exist to protect you from accountancy firms that regularly mess up, and make legitimate accountancy firms accountable for bad practices. Make sure you check for  at least one of these qualifications when picking an accountancy service!

Reputation

We live in the age of reviews: pretty much anyone with an internet connection can leave a review of a product or service they’ve used on Yell or Google. While you shouldn’t treat reviews as gospel in some circumstances (like a low review count), always check to see if accountancy firms have provided a good service to previous clients.

If you have friends or colleagues who have used a particular accountancy firm before, ask them for their opinions too, since it’s easier to trust their word than a pseudo-anonymous review left on a website.

Professionalism

This filters into the other two factors you’re looking for, but it’s by far the most important aspect: regardless of whether the company is straight-laced and humorless or quirky and fun to work with, they need to take their clients seriously. They need to be proactive, intuitive and knowledgeable about your company’s circumstances in order to be a decent accountancy service.

In conclusion, picking the right accountancy firm for your company isn’t very complicated, and picking the right one the first time can save you a lot of headaches later on.
